Unless there is something wrong with your boiler, it tends to be left in a cupboard and forgotten about. And unless you’ve recently moved house, had a boiler issue that needed fixing, or just installed a brand-new boiler, it can easily go years before you think about getting your boiler serviced.
Boilers should be serviced every 12 months, ideally in the warmer months as it means any issues can be flagged and sorted before winter. Engineers are usually less busy during summer, so it’s also often easier and quicker to get an appointment.

What does a boiler service involve?

A boiler service is a thorough check up conducted by a Gas Safe registered engineer to ensure that your boiler and central heating system are in good working order.
During the service, the engineer will inspect all the different boiler components to make sure they meet safety standards, check for any obstructions and that everything is fitted safely, and then fire up the boiler to make sure the pressure is correct and that there are no working faults. The engineer will also clean the inside of the boiler during an inspection.
A boiler service usually takes 30 minutes, and you’ll receive a report outlining anything they’ve found.

What are the benefits of getting an annual boiler service?

There are many reasons to get your boiler serviced each year. If you have either a boiler manufacturer’s warranty or boiler and central heating insurance, you’ll often find a yearly service is a requirement – skipping the service means your cover is void!
Even for those without insurance, having a regular boiler service is important. A faulty boiler can be really dangerous, and having regular services helps to keep your home safe. It also helps stave away full boiler breakdowns; identifying where parts may need replacing, before they can cause widespread damage, means you can fix your boiler more quickly, and often more cheaply, than if the boiler breaks down completely.
Boiler services can also help to reduce your energy bills as it ensures the different boiler components are in good condition, which keeps the boiler running more efficiently.
